Anxiety

Many college students across the world suffer from anxiety related to college. My goal with this post is to help college students cope with it and overcome it.

4-5 Facts about college anxiety

  • 63% of college students in the US felt anxiety in the past year
  • Anxiety can and will impair academic performance
  • The number of college students suffering from anxiety is exponentially increasing
  • Minorities may have barriers to finding help with it
  • Having anxiety is linked to having other mental health issues and disorders
  •
Anxiety causes persistent feelings of worry in certain situations. This can cause academic impairment, panic attacks, and inhibit students from performing well in their day-to-day life. This negatively impacts the emotional side of the wellness wheel by negatively affecting a person's mind and mood.

    Coping strategies

    1. Meditation

    • Meditation has been known to alleviate signs and symptoms of anxiety and can be a useful tool to combat it. Start by meditating for 3 minutes, and then add a minute each day you practice it. That way, you can progressively build up to meditating for 15-20 minutes at a time.

    2. Deep Breathing

    • Deep breathing can help lower stress and reduce anxiety. When using deep breathing, utilize the 2-4-6-8 technique. Start by quickly exhaling air from your lungs to the count of 2, then breathe through your nose and inhale to the count of 4. Hold your breath to the count of 6, and then slowly exhale for a count of 8.
